Autumn Term 2009
Welcome to a new school year at Spinfield School. I hope your child is settling well into Class 1S. Set out below is an outline of the work that your child will be completing this term.
English:
Fiction/Poetry: Stories in familiar settings, stories from a range of cultures.
Non-Fiction: Labels, lists, signs and captions.
Phonic focus: Revision of letter sounds and alphabetical knowledge. Consonant, vowel, consonant word building.
Maths:
1. Counting, partitioning and calculating.
2. Securing number facts and understanding shape.
3. Handling data and measures.
4. Calculating, measuring and understanding shape.
5.Securing number facts, relationships and calculating.
Geography:
Around our School and The Local Area: Simple map skills, investigating different aspects of the local area e.g. jobs, buildings, leisure facilities.
The ongoing project of ‘Where in the World is Barnaby Bear’ will also be introduced to facilitate this topic. Any child who may be going on holiday will get the opportunity to take Barnaby on holiday with them and keep a diary to share their experiences.
History: Science: Information & Communication Technology: Art & Design: RE / PHSE: Design and Technology: Games: Focusing on the skills of sending and receiving using small equipment. General Organisation If your child is unable to come to school please notify the office by 10.00am on the first day of absence to explain the reason. If we do not hear from you by 10.00am a member of staff will contact you. Please make sure all items of clothing and PE kit are clearly labelled (preferably sewn-on) and make sure children have a warm coat to wear during the morning break and lunch hour. PE/Games lessons are on: Tuesdays and Thursdays (Please make sure P.E kit is in school at all times.) If for any reason your child is unable to take part in a P.E or Games lesson, please provide a note. Library books will be changed on Fridays All library books will be collected in during the penultimate week of term. Medicines Children must not bring medicines of any kind into school without prior agreement with Ms. Hartley. Homework We value the support of parents in providing the time, encouragement and suitable environment for the children in which to complete their homework. In setting homework for the children, we aim to provide a relevant activity for them to do in which parents may be involved and which can aid their general educational progress. The following are some examples of work to be completed at home: • Reading - School reading books will be brought home on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, please listen to your child read and sign their reading card to confirm that the book has been completed. Please ensure your child brings in his/her reading bag and book everyday. Parent Consultations There will be an opportunity for you to discuss how your child is progressing and raise any points for clarification at our parent consultation evening / afternoons on: Wednesday 21st October 4.00pm - 6.30pm School Governor Class Link In order that the school governors can gain closer links with the pupils and staff, we have attached a governor to each of the classes in the school. He/she will endeavour to make at least one visit to their class during the term and will support the class teacher by working with the children sharing his/her expertise in a relevant area or accompanying a school visit. If you are available to help with reading, changing reading books or general jobs in class please let me know as any help is much appreciated. Please note you must be CRB checked to help in school and forms are available in the office if you need to complete one. Parent helpers are particularly needed in these time slots:- • Monday, Wednesday and Friday 9.00am (to check book bags and change reading books) Additional Information: I will bring the children out of school to meet you each day. Please also remember that we are a nut-free school so no nuts or nut products should be brought to school. There will be no major history project this term. However, we will be looking at sequencing during some of our English lessons.
Music:
To explore the ‘Music Express’ scheme of work where children consider the sound and duration of music. The children also take part in a Key Stage 1 singing session each week.
Ourselves – Exploring the senses and the body, drawing comparisons between humans and animals.
Pushes and Pulls – Observing movements, parts of the body and movement and how objects can be pushed or pulled.
Many links will be made during the course of the term with ICT and other areas of the curriculum. The children will become familiar with the computer by developing ‘mouse’ and ‘keyboard’ skills to create labels and captions. The children will learn about information being presented in a variety of forms and that ICT can be used to communicate and handle information in different ways.
Self - Portraits: To develop the skills of sketching (different pencil techniques and shading) and painting by conducting a detailed observational drawing.
The children will explore the topics of ‘myself’ and ‘celebrations’ in RE and ‘new beginnings’ and ‘getting on and falling out’ in PHSE
Moving Pictures: To explore and develop the skills in making simple levers and sliding mechanisms to eventually design, make and evaluate their own moving greeting card.
PE:
Dance: Developing movements through feelings and also creating an expressive dance entitled ‘the toy shop’
Gym: Points and patches using large apparatus
• Spellings – These will be introduced later in the term
