Spinfield School Governors have a vested interest in improving the children's education and supporting the staff.  Governors bring a wide range of experience and interest to the role and whilst some have professional qualifications others don't.  What is important is enthusiasm, an interest in supporting the school and being involved in promoting high standards.

At Spinfield we work closely as a team.  Governors are elected or appointed for a four-year term.  The Governors are like a board of directors and make decisions about how the school is run.  The Head teacher is like the Chief Executive who is responsible for the day-to-day running of the school.  School Governors have legal duties, powers and responsibilities.  They can only act together not as individuals.  We meet once a term in school and there are various committees and working groups, which meet as needed during the term

Governors are appointed to work in partnership with the staff to help:

·         Promote high standards of educational attainment

·         Decide aspects of the curriculum and school policies

·         Devise, agree and monitor the School Improvement Plan with the headteacher and staff

·         Publish a school prospectus and an annual report and meeting for parents

·         Draw up an action plan after an inspection by OFSTED

·         Set standards of behaviour

·         Interview and select staff

·         Manage the school's budget.

School Governors are made up from; parents, teachers at the school, local council representatives, community representatives and business people.

The minutes of the Governors' meetings are displayed on the Governors' notice board in the reception area of school.

To strengthen the partnership between the school and its Governors, each Governor has a class and curriculum link in the school.  We learn more about the curriculum by becoming involved with teachers in their specialist subject. Each term, two Governors spend a day in school getting to know the staff and children better, and gaining insight into a typical Spinfield day. We also accompany the school on educational visits.  Two Governors also carry out an extensive health and safety inspection termly.

As a Governor at Spinfield School you will have the chance to develop new skills and practice existing ones, such as participating in meetings, asking questions, making suggestions, appointing members of staff and working a part of a team.

If you are interested in becoming a Governor at Spinfield School, why not come along and visit the school and find out how you can be involved.
